How Markah grades, explained.
A short guide for teachers. If anything's unclear, email hello@markah.my — we usually reply within a day.
Getting Started
Go to Setup, choose the exam type and enter the student's name. Then go to Grade, take a photo of the essay or upload an image file. Markah will OCR the text and return a full CEFR-aligned grade within seconds.
Markah currently supports PT3 (Part 1 and Part 3), SPM (directed writing and continuous writing), and MUET. More formats can be added — contact us if you need a specific exam type.
JPG and PNG work well. Use good lighting, hold the camera steady, and make sure the full essay is in frame. Blurry or dark images reduce OCR accuracy. PDF uploads are also supported for scanned documents.
Grading & Results
Markah uses a CEFR-aligned rubric with four criteria: Content, Language, Organisation, and Task Achievement. Each criterion is scored independently by the AI model and combined into a total score. Error annotations are shown inline in the essay.
Yes. On the Review page, tap any graded essay and use the correction flow to adjust the score. Corrections are logged and used to improve accuracy over time.
CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) describes language proficiency on a scale from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). For Malaysian school exams, most students fall between A2 and B2. The badge shown on each grade result corresponds to the student's estimated level.
